Two Homemade Body Scrubs For Exfoliation

Posted on: 12 October 2021

While using an exfoliating body scrub every day is a bit too harsh, using a scrub once or twice a week has a lot of benefits. Exfoliating those dead skin cells can help ease breakouts, combat aging, and promote a more youthful look. There are numerous body scrubs available in-store, but if you're feeling crafty, you can also make your own body scrub at home. Here are two different recipes to choose from.

Moisturizing Coconut Oil Scrub

This scrub is a good one to use if you're prone to dry skin. It will remove dead and flaky skin while providing a nice dose of moisture from the coconut oil. It's also made with ingredients you would use in your kitchen, which means you can whip it in your food processor without contaminating anything.

To make about 8 ounces of body scrub, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup packed, dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup fine kosher salt
  • 2 drops ginger essential oil
  • 2 drops vanilla essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon unscented, liquid castile soap

Combine all of the ingredients in a food processor, except for the soap. Pulse the food processor a few times to combine the mixture, then process it on the high-speed setting for 30 seconds. This should give it a whipped texture. Scrape down the sides of the food processor bowl. Add the soap, and pulse a few times to combine. Scoop into a jar, and use as you wish.

Energizing Citrus Scrub

If you want a scrub that will energize you and wake you up in the morning, this is it. The citrus oils and peels not only make the scrub smell great but also vitalize your skin. Made with jojoba oil, this scrub is gently moisturizing, but not heavy.

To make about 8 ounces of scrub, you'll need the following:

  • 1/3 cup jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons unscented liquid castile soap
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 cup fine kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • 3 drops lemon essential oil
  • 3 drops orange essential oil

Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir vigorously for about 2 minutes or until the ingredients are thoroughly combined. This scrub won't have a whipped texture but should get nice and creamy.

Either of these body scrubs would also make a nice gift. Make a batch for yourself and one for a friend, and enjoy.
